It’s one everyone’s mind today. We’re all thinking it. Heck, the entire sports world has NCAA Tournament on the brain. If no one else is going to ask the question I might as well go ahead: why on Earth did ESPN waste time with a Women’s NCAA Tournament Selection Show?
While I was pounding out a few miles on the treadmill yesterday, the 50-plus year-old (I’m guessing here) woman next to me had the remote – which is always a dangerous prospect. While I love QVC as much as the next guy, I politely asked if she could change the gym’s television to something else. As if to punish me for my insolence, she settled on ESPN’s coverage of the women’s bracket selections.
The female version of bracketology was one of the most pointless exercises in the history of television. It ranked somewhere between Viva Laughlin, Manimal and The Jay Leno Show.
My question is, after UConn has won 72 straight games, been a unanimous No. 1 for the entire 2009-10 season and has a player that might team up with our Commander-in-Chief, why even have this kind of special? We all know (and don’t really care) that UConn is going to win another freaking national title. Whoop dee freakin’ do. Awesome, hang that banner Lady Huskies, then get off my television please.
I’d rather ESPN showed professional bowling than a show dedicating an hour to see who’ll be winning the regionals in Dayton, Sacramento, Memphis and Kansas City.
And that’s another thing, if you’re tournament is important enough to get its own show on ESPN, you should be able to find better places for the regionals.
Dayton? When I have insomnia, I think of the day-to-day life of an average Daytonian. Memphis? Yeah I want to dodge bullets on the way to my game. Sacramento? I’ve been to Sacramento several times. If you haven’t, you’re the lucky one. Kansas City? Let me tell you something about Kansas City – there is absolutely no good joke to be made about Kansas City…
God bless women’s basketball, really, God bless em. They play hard, sound, (somewhat) fundamental basketball. That doesn’t mean I want to watch it.
So good luck to all the rest of the teams in the field this year. And after UConn is done getting handed its title maybe ESPN can have an hour-long special discussing how Albert Pujols is quite good at hitting a baseball.
