In a great year for freshmen shortstop, FR SS Nolan Fontana (Florida) has been the best: 3-4, 2 SB, 2 R. He’s now hitting .400/.486/.567 through 9 games, easily Florida’s best hitter in the early going.

By now, most fans of the University of Florida baseball team are well-aware the Gators were the darling of the national media heading into the 2010 season. An incredibly deep stable of talented young pitchers would be cited by many preseason publications as the primary reason for including Florida among the top-ten college baseball programs in the country heading into the season.

MIAMI — The Gators got all the offense they needed when Bryson Smith launched a three-run homer in the fourth inning and Tommy Toledo and Kevin Chapman combined to limit Miami to four hits and just one earned run as the Gators took the weekend series from the Hurricanes with a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon at Alex Rodriguez Stadium.
