Stellar offense lifts Gators over SC

The No. 13 Florida Gators defeated South Carolina 3-0, in the Gamecock’s fifth-annual “Dig Pink” match in support of Breast Care Awareness Month. This second half of ESPNU’s Wednesday Night Women’s Volleyball doubleheader brought 945 fans out to the Volleyball Competition Facility on Wednesday night in Columbia, S.C. as the Gators won, 25-13, 25-18, 25-23.

Volleyball’s Kelly Murphy up for Lowe’s Senior Award

University of Florida’s Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) was one of ten NCAA® women’s volleyball players selected as a finalist Wednesday for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and must excel in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. In Murphy’s time as a Florida Gator, UF won two SEC championships and accumulated a phenomenal 94-15 record.

Headlinin’: Boise WR charged four games for 20-year-old Camry

Making the morning rounds.

• Well, we knew it was “improper,” but not like that. Adding to the lamest string of “improper benefits” on record, the NCAA revealed Wednesday the shocking excess that led to the suspension of Boise State receiver Geraldo Boldewijn: Use of a 1990 Toyota Camry with 177,000 miles on it, along with driver’s insurance coverage. Total value? $700, the amount Boldewijn was forced to pay to charity to restore his eligibility, which presumably included the pine air freshener hanging from the rearview window. Speaking from personal experience as someone who once drove a 1990 Toyota Camry with an odometer topping 100,000 in high school and college, I say with great confidence that Geraldo is the charity.

Boldewijn will be back Friday night against Fresno State after sitting out the Broncos’ first four games, along with senior safety (and fellow Dutchman) Cedric Febis, who was forced to donate a whopping $20 to charity as penance for unspecified recruiting violations and “impermissible transportation.” A third Netherlands native, spectacularly-named defensive lineman Rocky Tjong-A-Tjoe, remains in limbo for unknown reasons. All violations are classified as “isolated and inadvertent” and almost certainly will not lead to any further penalties. [Idaho Statesman]

• Hurricane down. Miami defensive tackle Marcus Forston, a former five-star recuit with an NFL future, is out for the season after suffering “a non-contact knee injury” during Wednesday’s practice. He’d already missed the ‘Canes’ season-opening loss at Maryland as one of eight players suspended for allegedly accepting improper benefits from infamous booster Nevin Shapiro. (Including, in Forston’s case, a steak dinner, at least one strip club visit and a “bowling for dollars” tournament, all in Forston’s freshman season in 2008.) He’ll have one season of eligibility remaining in 2012. [HurricaneSports.com]

• Happy trails. To the surprise of no one, Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert has decided to transfer after losing his starting job and subsequently watching the offense take off under sophomore Case McCoy and true freshman David Ash. Gilbert arrived in 2009 as the home-grown, five-star heir apparent to then-senior Colt McCoy, and leaves as one of the most notorious busts in school history: In 14 career starts, he was 7-7 with 19 interceptions, not including a four-interception debacle after being thrust into the 2009-10 BCS title game after Colt McCoy was knocked out the first series.

Next stop: Most likely at SMU, where Gilbert was reportedly spotted at practice ($) on Wednesday and would have one year of eligibility remaining in 2013. [Austin American-Statesman]

• House-cleaning. Perhaps assuming he’s doomed this weekend at Stanford, anyway, Colorado coach Jon Embree has handed down indefinite suspensions to five players — four of them defensive backs, including starter Parker Orms — for unspecified violations of team rules. None of the suspensions are related to an arrest or other legal issues, according to the Boulder Daily Camera, but the violations were apparently serious enough that none of the five are expected to play again this season, and may be finished at CU for good.

In the meantime, the Buffs were already using two newly converted offensive players in the secondary in last weekend’s loss to Washington State, which rallied for two touchdowns in the final three minutes to erase a 10-point Colorado lead. • Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. While a University of Missouri official was getting a little loose-lipped with the Associated Press over Mizzou’s ongoing negotiations with the SEC, the rest of the Big 12 spent Wedneday shrugging ostentatiously over the prospect of the Tigers’ departure. The chairmans of the boards of regents at Kansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma all assured USA Today that Missouri doesn’t hold the conference’s fate in its hands, the latter saying on the record, “I don’t see Missouri leaving making it any worse than Texas A&M did.”

“I’ve had enough conversations with enough people to know, if they leave, that we’ll continue and build ourselves back up to where we’ll be fine,” said Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds. “If their desire is not to be in the Big 12, they need to take the option. Because the worst-case scenario would be for them to be in the Big 12 but not want to be in the Big 12.” [USA Today]

NCAA volleyball Regional times announced

The NCAA announced on Wednesday the match times for the NCAA Volleyball Regional being hosted in Gainesville. The semifinals will be played at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, December 9 and the final’s opening serve will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 10.
